Giant Cross in Groom, Texas

Filed under: Trip to Santa Fe 2011 — Christopher Crawford @ 1:12 am

This 190 foot tall cross stands along I-40 outside the small town of Groom, Texas. The people who built the cross in 1995 claimed, at the time, that it was the largest cross in the Americas, but there are now at least two in the United States that are taller. The cross in Effingham, Illinois looks identical to the Groom cross. It was built using the same design, but is 8 feet taller! The Groom cross can be seen 20 miles away, thanks to the flat landscape of the Texas Panhandle. There is a group in Richmond, Indiana trying to raise money to build another cross with this same design in that small town in southeastern Indiana.
