Update on Archie Arnold’s Grave

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 10:58 pm

A visitor to my website left a comment on my blog giving me a link to info on why Archie Arnold had the expired parking meters on his tombstone. He got the meters after backing over them on the street in his hometown in Ohio and after paying the town to replace them, he asked for them and kept them for his grave. He was dying from liver disease and thought the expired meters would be funny, so he changed his will to require that the meters be mounted by his grave.

Snap One

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 12:15 am

This old door closes off the space between two old buildings on Wells Street in Fort Wayne. The graffiti tag practically begged me to Snap One of it!

Archie Arnold has Expired!

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 9:21 pm

A pair of expired parking meters adorn Archie Arnold’s tombstone at the Scipio Cemetery in rural Allen County’s Scipio Township.

Mr Arnold, who was born in 1920, and died in 1982, certainly had a sense of humor! The back of the tombstone, shown in my photograph, has a quote engraved upon it: “Fear the Lord and tell the people what you want.”

Old farmhouse in southern Indiana

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 12:23 am

I made this photograph over four years ago, in February of 2006, while driving back to Fort Wayne after visiting a friend in Louisville. This house sits on a hill overlooking Interstate 65 in southern Indiana.

Too Much Information!

Filed under: Informal Snapshots, Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 12:45 pm

I was driving down Spy Run Avenue in Fort Wayne a few days ago when I had to stop at the traffic light at the corner of Spy Run and Fourth Street. I glanced over toward the old building that houses Cardinal Tattoo when my eye caught this little kid-size 20 inch BMX bike leaned against the front of the tattoo shop.

Trees in Black & White

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 1:04 pm

Here is a black & white photograph of the landscape scene that I posted a few days ago. These four trees stood along Yohne Road in southwest Allen County, Indiana until they were bulldozed last year to make way for an expansion of the National Serv-All landfill.

Lonely Tree

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 11:20 pm

This is one of the most perfectly formed trees that I have ever seen. It is in a field along Lima Road (Indiana State Road 3) a little south of Huntertown, Indiana. It has been a favorite subject for several years.

The Trees on Yohne Road

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 1:19 am

I have photographed this group of four trees on Yohne Road in southwest Allen County many times over the years. They were located in the middle of a field that is now owned by the National Serv-All Landfill. In September of last year, they were bulldozed to make way for an expansion of the landfill. This photograph was made in February or 2005. It is one of hundreds of older images that I am working on adding to my online portfolio.

The Jolly Green Giant at Cardinal Tattoo

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 11:03 pm

The Jolly Green Giant used to stand in the front window of Cardinal Tattoo at the corner of Spy Run Avenue and Fourth Street in Fort Wayne. He was moved to the back of the shop in the spring of 2010, so he’s still around. I made this photograph in December of last year.

Wells Street Coin Laundry

Filed under: Forgotten Indiana — Christopher Crawford @ 12:43 am

This little laundromat must be the smallest in town. It only has a few machines built into one wall inside. I had to wait weeks to get this photograph because there were always cars parked on the street in front of it. As I was walking down Wells Street with my camera in hand, it began to rain.
